U.S. Olympic Committee President Robert Helmick, indirectly noting the role of Ted Turner and the Turner Broadcasting System in this summer’s Goodwill Games at Moscow, said the staging of the 1990 competition in Seattle should be organized under guidelines that support the Olympic movement and amateur sports in the United States.

“Such competitions should be organized in a way which supports the Olympic movement and do not intentionally or unwittingly set up an alternative competition to the Olympic Games,” Helmick said. “It should be governed by an amateur sports group, as are our national championships and collegiate competitions, and not by a commercial enterprise which organizes it solely for its own profit.”
