BRISBANE, Australia — A 7-year-old boy found a treasure of rubies, sapphires and gold jewelry buried under an old church at Ipswich, west of Brisbane, police said Thursday.
Ricky Kilpatrick stumbled on the jewels as he was pulling out old stumps for firewood from the demolished St John’s Uniting Church.
“Some jewels were in boxes. Others were wrapped in newspaper dated 1922,” a police spokesman said.
The treasure, estimated to be worth more than $100,000, has been placed in a bank vault in Brisbane.
Police said they are checking records for thefts of the jewels but that the Uniting Church can claim them if the owner is not found within three months.
