AND NOW HERE’S THE NEWS: I.R.S. Records debuted the concept of the “cassingle” several years ago, releasing singles by groups like the Go-Go’s as specially priced cassettes. Now Geffen Records is reviving the format with a new “maxi-cassingle” version of songs by Peter Gabriel. The specially priced cassette features a pair of dance remixes of Gabriel’s hit single, “Sledgehammer,” plus a remix of “I Have the Touch” and “Don’t Break This Rhythm.” . . . Meanwhile, Geffen is taking a grass-roots approach in its efforts to break young popster Peter Case. The ex-Plimsouls leader is out on tour, opening for Jackson Browne. But he’s getting additional exposure in each town by playing acoustic dates on his off-nights at local record stores and progressive radio stations in each area.
