One person was killed and eight wounded when security forces opened fire on angry crowds in the Indian state of Punjab. Authorities blamed rising tensions over the transfer of Chandigarh, a city in Haryana state, to Punjab in exchange for 70,000 acres of Punjab territory. The Indian government later announced a tentative date of July 15 for the transfer.
