Nicaragua’s Defense Ministry said that government troops captured a foreigner June 16 in a clash with U.S.-backed rebels and that the man may be an American. A brief communique said the “mercenary” had identified himself to a former Costa Rican officer, during a visit to Costa Rica, as “Lalio Warnes of North American nationality.” U.S. Embassy press attache Susan Clyde said she had no confirmation of the report.
