With music and ceremony, the Mexican army Saturday burned more than half a ton of cocaine that had been confiscated in recent months.

A detonator pressed by Defense Secretary Juan Arevalo Gardoqui and Atty. Gen. Sergio Garcia Ramirez touched off a blaze in a furnace set up in a field at Military Camp No. 1 and reduced 1,383 pounds of cocaine to ash in a matter of seconds.

The defense minister said the burning was not in response to recent U.S. allegations that Mexico has not done enough to stem to flow of drugs into the United States.
