The Palmer Method

Re “English Teacher Challenges Her Locke Students to Excel” (by Gary Libman, May 22):

The inspiring article on Barbara Palmer has given me hope. How encouraging to know that there are still teachers, despite the influence of TV and non-involved parents, who continue to challenge the greatness in all of us.

I do volunteer tutoring of adults learning to read through the California Literacy Campaign and am appalled at the number of intelligent, hard-working adults who are English speaking and have no physical impairments--and cannot read! Somewhere along the line they were “passed” through the system (perhaps by well-meaning or just plain frustrated teachers) and allowed to graduate without being able to read a menu or a street sign, to say nothing of just reading for pleasure.

Keep up the good example, Mrs. Palmer--don’t let us “off the hook.”
