Eastern Airlines President Joseph B. Leonard was named acting chief executive of the soon-to-be Texas Air subsidiary, filling one of the two positions that Frank Borman is leaving, the company said.

Borman also has resigned as chairman of the Miami-based carrier and will be vice chairman of Texas Air, which is winding up its $676-million purchase of Eastern.

Leonard likely will not be appointed to replace Borman as chairman because Texas Air’s other subsidiaries, Continental Airlines and New York Air, do not have chairmen, Eastern said at the time of Borman’s resignation.

Leonard came to Eastern in 1984 after 17 years with Boeing, Northwest Orient and American airlines.

In September, 1985, he was named president and chief operating officer and was elected a director.
