Defector Dials 911

NEW YORK —
A 26-year-old Romanian seaman jumped ship in Brooklyn today, dialed the 911 emergency number on a pay phone and asked police for political asylum. Police said Virgil Anastasiu, an engineer on the freighter Bazias, was being questioned by the Immigration and Naturalization Service.
