According to the survey, salary increases are expected to be smaller in 1987 than in recent years. The survey, conducted last spring by the business-sponsored research group, said pay increases for salaried workers will average 5.5% in 1987, down from about 6% this year and in 1985. The largest gains are expected to be in banking, where salaries should rise by 6%, the same as projected for this year but down from 7% in 1985, the board said.
