Bringing High Jinks Under Control at 2 High Schools

Recently you reported this event: Seniors at Pacifica High School in Garden Grove were involved in and arrested for school and commercial vandalism amounting to about $5,000 in damages (June 7).

Now in all fairness to the school’s tarnished reputation in the community, the faculty requests that you allow us to report the outcome.

Principal Tom Holler (not “Hoffer”) and members of the faculty devised the following plan for full restitution:

Four hours’ campus service, ranging from secretarial to custodial.

A public apology by a Class of ’86 representative.

Restoration of all stolen commercial property.

Payment of $121.38 for damages.

Participation by students and parents in a campaign to curb future vandalism at Pacifica.

These conditions were to be completed by each and every student involved in the action by June 13 at 4 p.m. If the conditions were not met, the individual would be excluded from the graduation ceremony and Grad Night at Disneyland, no questions asked! The students got the message and worked hard and fast to meet the deadline.

Holler also issued a strong warning: If any senior behaved out of order at graduation, he would end the proceedings then and there. Seniors were searched by police officers prior to the ceremony for beach balls, water pistols, firecrackers, rubber chickens, etc. The graduation ceremony was the best Pacifica has seen in years!

We have all--administrators, faculty, parents and especially students--learned a valuable lesson: We must all assume responsibility.
