Share

NAACP Executive Director Benjamin L. Hooks pledged the civil rights group would continue to fight apartheid and called the South African government of P.W. Botha the most repressive on the face of the earth. Hooks, in a keynote address in Baltimore to the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People’s 77th convention, said the group has long fought apartheid in South Africa and “our opposition tonight is no less intense than it was at the beginning of our involvement.” Althea Simmons, chief lobbyist and Washington bureau director, said the NAACP first condemned apartheid in 1910 and, “We have called for total divestment for years.”
