This republic today became the first South Pacific island nation to establish diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union, Vanuatu officials said.

Vanuatu, formerly the Anglo-French New Hebrides, has established formal ties with Libya and held its first talks with Moscow on a fishing accord last month.
