Soviets Establish Ties With S. Pacific Island
This republic today became the first South Pacific island nation to establish diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union, Vanuatu officials said.
Vanuatu, formerly the Anglo-French New Hebrides, has established formal ties with Libya and held its first talks with Moscow on a fishing accord last month.
Commenting on the fishing talks, a U.S. official said: “It has no relation to economic factors. There is no Soviet consumer demand for tuna. The Soviet long-term aim clearly is subversion. . . . “
