Soviets Establish Ties With S. Pacific Island

PORT VILA, Vanuatu —
This republic today became the first South Pacific island nation to establish diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union, Vanuatu officials said.
Vanuatu, formerly the Anglo-French New Hebrides, has established formal ties with Libya and held its first talks with Moscow on a fishing accord last month.
Commenting on the fishing talks, a U.S. official said: “It has no relation to economic factors. There is no Soviet consumer demand for tuna. The Soviet long-term aim clearly is subversion. . . . “
