Assad Pledges Support in Freeing U.S. Hostages
President Hafez Assad told California Rep. Robert K. Dornan (R-Garden Grove) on Monday that Syria will continue efforts to free American hostages in Lebanon, Syria’s official news agency SANA reported.
The agency quoted Assad as telling Dornan that Syria has tried to secure the hostages’ release for humanitarian reasons, despite Syria’s troubled relations with the United States. Five Americans are believed to be held by Muslim terrorists in Lebanon.
“Syria understands the feelings of the families of the hostages. . . ,” Assad was quoted.
