NEW YORK — The chief judge for New York state will fill the Fourth of July “Liberty” conference spot vacated by Chief Justice Warren E. Burger, Liberty Weekend officials said Monday.
Sol Wachter was named to fill the top slot in the two-day conference, “Liberty--The Next 100 Years,” after Burger withdrew several days before he announced his retirement June 17 from the Supreme Court.
Also named to the conference, which begins Saturday, was Charles Fried, solicitor general of the United States, who will replace Judge Antonin Scalia of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, a Supreme Court nominee who also resigned his role in the conference.
