An aging and confused Mao Tse-tung brought catastrophe to China by launching the 1966-76 Cultural Revolution, General Secretary Hu Yaobang said in a major speech in Peking preceding the Communist Party’s 65th anniversary. The address was one of the party’s strongest attacks yet on China’s revolutionary leader. Hu delivered the speech on April 9, and it was just was published in commemoration of the July 1, 1921, founding of the Communist Party of China.
