The Potomac Boat Club gave the United States an encouraging start today with a victory in the first round of the Henley Royal Regatta. The crew of four from Washington, D.C., beat the English boat from Bedford Star Rowing Club by two lengths.

Three of the four crewmen had been to Henley previously. The No. 3 man, Mark Coleson, reached the final with the 1976 Potomac crew.

The Union Boat Club of Boston won by 3 lengths over an English crew from the Quintin Boat Club in the Ladies Plate, the regatta’s No. 2 event for eights.

Before the second of the day’s 66 races, a pleasure cruiser collided with a local boat, Thames Tradesmen’s B, and broke its bow.
