U.S. Support for S. Africa

Solarz was right in stating that “America should set a moral standard” regarding imposition of economic sanctions against the South African apartheid government.

We’ve heard from the President and we’ve heard from many of this country’s leading financial experts that sanctions would only hurt those we are trying to help and help those we are trying to reform. But when are the experts going to look beyond their tunneled vantage points and see how positive ethical impacts could far outweigh any adverse economic impacts such sanctions would incur.

The Reagan Administration’s current policy of “constructive engagement” obviously isn’t working, and political and living standards of South Africa’s black majority can’t get much worse.
