Papandreou’s Wife Says She Asked Assad to Help on Hostages
Margaret Papandreou, wife of Greek Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou, said Wednesday that she personally appealed to Syrian President Hafez Assad to help free kidnaped American and French hostages in Lebanon.
“I am very satisfied that President Assad is doing all he can to achieve the release of the hostages,” Papandreou, who was born in the United States, said in a statement after she returned from Damascus.
She said she will inform the families of the Americans about her talks with the Syrian president.
Eighteen foreigners, believed kidnaped by various terrorist groups, are missing in Lebanon.
Papandreou, a leading campaigner for women’s rights, was in Syria for talks with Syrian women’s organizations about an international women’s initiative for peace.
