A West German court convicted a former Nazi officer of defaming the government and the dead by distributing videotapes claiming that the German army used no gas chambers at German death camps in World War II. Otto Ernst Remer, once a major general in the SS security force, distributed the videotapes at May, 1985, reunion of SS veterans in Nesselwang, West Germany. Remer also referred to West Germany’s governing Christian Democrats as toads. The Kaufeburen, West Germany, court said it would suspend a six-month prison sentence for Remer if he paid a $460 fine.
