Law enforcement officers using dogs, helicopters and horses captured the barefoot, tattooed convicted rapist known as “Animal” without firing a shot Friday night, two days after he took a sheriff’s dispatcher hostage and broke out of jail.

Jerry Walter McFadden, who was believed to be armed with a .38-caliber police service revolver, was taken without any shots being fired, an official with the nearby Gilmer Police Department said.

“He’s in custody. I don’t have any details,” Upshur County Chief Deputy James Beasley said.

McFadden had taken Rosalie Williams hostage after escaping Wednesday from Upshur County jail in Gilmer, but she got away from him late Thursday night. McFadden was captured not far from where Williams was found near Big Sandy, a town of 1,200 people.

Williams, 24, escaped Thursday after 16 hours in a boxcar when McFadden, who had left to get some water, reportedly was distracted by barking dogs.

Williams, who suffered scrapes and bruises, was released from a hospital Friday.

McFadden, 38, who has been convicted three times of rape and was awaiting trial for murder, calls himself “Animal.”
