American Aid to the Contras
Your editorial was right on target. Your opening statement--”Members of Congress may try to deny the harsh truth of the matter, but they have finally given President Reagan carte blanche to wage his dirty little war against Nicaragua”--speaks to more than harsh truth, for it reflects the devious policy of the Administration. And now we have the spineless acquiescence of the Congress.
One congressman put it, “I think the President finally wore us down.” That is a gutless explanation at best. If the Congress has a position of peace and compassion for humanity, then all the lobbying by the President should have had little influence. To be sure, it is his war and in spite of evidence to the contrary, he is determined to make everyone view the Sandinistas as a Red wave.
The Congress has now become part of this atrocity. Its decision is an affront to the peace efforts of the Latin countries. The Contadora Group has tried to negotiate, but the United States seems intent on sabotaging its process.
