A 27-member U.S.-China expedition planning an eight-week raft trip down the Yangtze River is approaching the river’s headwaters in remote Qinghai province, the official New China News Agency said Tuesday.

The agency said the expedition, led by Ken Warren of Portland, Ore., set out Monday from a base camp on the banks of the Tuotuo River, one of the sources of the upper Yangtze.

In a cable sent to Peking, expedition members said they were heading by land for Qinghai’s Geladaindong Mountain, where they will stay for 12 days while preparing for the 2,000-mile, 75-day journey down China’s longest river.
