U.S. Pact Limits Asylum for IRA

WASHINGTON — The Senate today overwhelmingly ratified a new extradition treaty with Britain designed to deny political asylum to members of the outlawed Irish Republican Army suspected of murder, bombings and other violent crimes.
President Reagan had pushed the Senate to ratify the pact as a symbol of American support for British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher by denying U.S. safe haven to suspected terrorists. The vote was 87 to 10.
