THE GOODWILL GAMES : Roundup : Soviet Athletes Win Six of the Day’s Seven Gold Medals

The Soviet Union continued its relentless march through the inaugural Goodwill Games Friday, collecting six of a possible seven gold medals and widening its lead over the United States in the medal race.

The games, billed as a battle between the two superpowers, has turned into a one-sided affair.

After Friday’s competition, the Soviets had a total of 79 gold medals and 174 overall. The United States had 35 gold medals and 106 overall. There are 51 gold medals yet to be decided.

The Soviets earned two gold medals in weightlifting and one each in women’s gymnastics, men’s judo, men’s team handball and women’s team handball Friday.

The only gold they didn’t win was in the snatch category in weightlifting’s 100-kilogram (220-pound) class, and they didn’t miss that by much.

The Soviet Union’s Yuri Dandik and Romania’s Nick Vlad each lifted 413 pounds, but Vlad was given the gold medal because he weighs less than Dandik.

Soviet Ruslan Balaev, third at 407 3/4 pounds in the snatch, took the gold medal in the clean-and-jerk category, lifting 501 1/2 pounds, and won the overall title, with a total of 909 pounds.

In women’s gymnastics, Vera Kolesnikova led a 1-2-3 Soviet sweep, collecting 78.55 points for the all-around title. Her teammates, Elena Shushunova and Oksana Omelianchik, who tied for first place in the last world championships, finished with 78.40 and 78.10, respectively.

Kolesnikova also beat the gymnasts who scored perfect 10.0s Friday. Shushunova, who had a 10.0 on the uneven bars in Thursday’s preliminaries, got a 10.0 in the vault, while Omelianchik got a 10.0 in the floor exercises.

Kolesnikova, meanwhile, had scores of 9.90 in the vault, 9.80 in the uneven bars, 9.85 in the floor exercises and 9.90 on the beam for a total of 39.35 Friday, following her score of 39.20 in the preliminaries.

In judo, the Soviet’s Vladimir Shestakov won the gold in the 78-kilogram (171 1/2-pound) division, beating Marcel Pietre of France, 7-0, in the final bout.

In team handball, both Soviet teams finished with 5-0 records, the men completing their perfect performance with a 26-18 victory over Poland and the women beat Hungary, 26-15, in their finale.

Team handball provided the United States with its only medal of the day, as the men finished in a second-place tie with Czechoslovakia, each with 2-3 records. The Americans, after winning their first two matches, suffered their third straight loss, 27-22, to a Soviet federation team, despite six goals by Steve Goss of Castro Valley, Calif.

The winless U.S. women’s handball team completed play with a 19-13 loss to West Germany.
