Importance of Interiors

It was a pleasure to read the article by Evelyn De Wolfe (June 29) concerning the American Society of Interior Designers’ gift to Pasadena on its centennial.

As the article stated, “Interior Design is a fragile art.” It is the first to be altered, covered, or changed completely to accommodate its new occupants. Historical preservationist, as well as present-day critics, are so often involved with the envelope, that they forget it is the content that causes its existence. The facade may be saved from the wrecking ball, but the interior is where the people work, play and live. It is only just, that these interiors were documented for us to realize their importance to our quality of life.

Architecture and interior design communicate in a substantial way the character of a community. It is difficult to know how much has been lost until our eyes can see it no longer. With documentation, such as the ASID Significant Interior Survey, we shall be able to know and appreciate the design and craftsmanship that are inherent in our interiors.
