Barry Bostwick will portray Valerie Bertinelli’s father in “I’ll Take Manhattan,” an eight-hour miniseries that CBS is making from the Judith Krantz novel. Others in the cast include Perry King, Francesca Annis, Jack Scalia, Jane Kaczmarek, Timothy Daly and Julianne Moore. . . . Another Krantz-inspired miniseries, “Mistral’s Daughter,” will be rerun by CBS over three nights, beginning July 30.

Three former football stars--Alex Karras, Dick Butkus and Bubba Smith--will team for “The Fun Bunch.” It’s a TV movie for ABC about a group of football players whose coach is kidnaped by what the network calls “a maniacal American financier-in-exile” who wants them to play a game against his bodyguards. Other NFL stars are expected to participate.

Briefly noted: Kate Jackson, who stars in “Scarecrow and Mrs. King” on CBS, is directing the first episode for the new season. . . . James Brolin is doing the same for the ABC series in which he appears, “Hotel”. . . . Glenn Frey will star in a music special for the Showtime cable channel early next year.

What’s a mother to do when her son falls in love with a lady her age? That’s the question posed by “Love 40,” a TV movie for CBS starring Ellen Burstyn, Tuesday Weld, Patrick Cassidy, Don Murray and Eli Wallach.

Castings: Carolyn McCormick has joined the cast of “Spenser: For Hire,” portraying an assistant district attorney. . . . Cindy Pickett, who made guest appearances on “St. Elsewhere” last season as nurse Carol Navino, will be a regular in that role this season. . . . Attorney F. Lee Bailey will appear as himself in an episode of “The A-Team” in which he defends the mercenaries against charges of treason.
