The Vatican focused on two American nuns and threatened them with formal disciplinary measures today for signing an abortion advertisement that appeared in the New York Times during the 1984 presidential campaign.

Sisters Barbara Ferraro and Patricia Hussey, based in Charleston, W.Va., were among 27 members of Roman Catholic religious communities who signed the ad, which held that the church’s total ban on abortion was not “the only legitimate Catholic position.” The Vatican demanded and received apologies from the 25 others and considers their cases closed.
