DESSI TAKES OVER ROLE IN ‘OTELLO’ FOR PLOWRIGHT

Share

Italian soprano Daniela Dessi will replace the announced Rosalind Plowright as Desdemona in Verdi’s “Otello,” inaugural production of the fall season of Music Center Opera in the Pavilion of the Music Center. Plowright has withdrawn because she is expecting a child in December.

Dessi will make her U.S. debut in the three “Otello” performances, Oct. 7, 10 and 12. She sang the role of Desdemona opposite Placido Domingo, the leading tenor in the Music Center Opera production, in Barcelona, Spain, in the spring of 1985. After her appearances here, Dessi will go to Chicago Lyric Opera for her debut there as Mimi in “La Boheme.”

Baritone Sherrill Milnes remains the Iago in the new production, designed by Guenther Schneider-Siemssen and Jan Skalicki. As previously announced, Lawrence Foster will conduct the augmented Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and Los Angeles Master Chorale.
