The World : Officer Indicted in Chile

Share

A civilian judge in Chile indicted an army lieutenant in the fatal burning of a young photographer but ordered the release of the seven other soldiers held as suspects. Witnesses have said that soldiers detained Rodrigo Rojas, 19--a Chilean living in the United States who had returned to his native country--and a female Chilean companion during a national protest against military rule July 2. According to the witnesses, the soldiers doused the couple with gasoline and set them afire. Rojas died, and his companion remains in critical condition. Originally, 25 soldiers were arrested as suspects, but 17 were released Monday.
