Most Oppose ‘Star Wars,’ Writer Says

WASHINGTON — Virtually every major U.S. religious denomination opposes President Reagan’s “Star Wars” defense initiative, says an article in This World magazine, a journal of religion and public policy.
On the basis of church documents and interviews with church spokesmen, Richard E. Sincere Jr. cites opposition by Roman Catholic leaders, mainline Protestant churches and ecumenical organizations.
Sincere, of Washington’s Ethics and Public Policy Center, says church criticism of the U.S. space-defense planning generally fails to note Soviet research in defense technologies.
