The Dislocation of 200 Families in Anaheim’s Chevy Chase

Your editorial “Relocation a Moral Dilemma” (July 20) is once again justified in getting right to the heart of the matter: City government’s responsibilities versus poor people’s legal rights.

The Chevy Chase residents of Anaheim should follow the example of “Hermandad Mexicana Nacional” of Santa Ana. Tenants should hire legal counsel to ensure that their rights are respected.

It is not that Larry J. Cabrera, Anaheim’s housing coordinator, is dishonest when it comes to relocating residents, but with an attorney negotiating for the displaced tenants, well, this will at least help Cabrera and city officials stay honest.

Mayor Don Roth, Orange County supervisor candidate and chairman of the Anaheim Redevelopment Agency, has the opportunity to pull together representatives of the city, tenants and community representatives, property owners, apartment managers and representatives of the local financial institutions to develop this blighted area for low-income residents, therefore constituting the highest and best use of that land.
