‘Teachers: True or False?’

If only teachers would agree to a two-tiered pay scale and to peer evaluation, and if only old teachers would retire, then the Establishment could improve education in this country. Students would learn more and parents would be satisfied without spending any money, without building new schools, and without any pain to society if only teachers would forgo some of their rights.

These myths deny the fact that educating people is a shared responsibility. It is the joint endeavor of students, parents, and society, as well as of teachers. To ignore this is to perpetuate the cycle of blame in which one group points the finger at another.

Many dedicated teachers give freely of their time and talents for the benefit of students. They do this in spite of a struggle for compensation, attempts to divide the profession, and editorials that take a simplistic view of problems.
