The World : 9 Gurkha Rioters Killed

Police in India’s West Bengal state fired on a mob of Gurkha separatists, killing nine, the United News of India said. The Gurkhas, seeking an independent homeland, attacked police with rocks and knives after 28 activists were arrested for defying a ban on public assembly, the agency said. In New Delhi, police arrested 800 people to try to end communal rioting, largely involving Sikhs and Hindus, in which six people were killed and 60 injured over the weekend. In Punjab state, Sikh extremists ended a two-day lull in violence, hacking a Hindu priest and a shopkeeper to death in the town of Patti, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.
