The Nation : ‘Star Wars’ Fund Misused

The Pentagon’s Strategic Defense Initiative Organization used money earmarked for “Star Wars” research for unauthorized projects such as air-conditioning for office buildings and roof repairs, according to a congressional audit. The General Accounting Office concluded that the expenditures should have been charged against Pentagon military construction funds. The GAO rejected a response to its findings by Lt. Gen. James A. Abrahamson, director of the “Star Wars” program, who said the research funds were used properly because the projects involved “test support facilities and support requirements.”
