Israel’s Supreme Court has upheld a Health Ministry order denying access to the national sperm bank to unmarried women who want to become pregnant by artificial insemination, court officials said.

A 39-year-old single woman had asked the court to overturn the ministry edict, saying the right of motherhood belongs to women rather than the government. She told the three-justice panel that she has little time left to bear children.

In its Monday ruling, the court rejected her argument and termed the ministry rule reasonable, the officials said.
