Detroit’s garbage collectors said they will return to work today, promising to begin hauling away the 42,500 tons of trash that has piled up during the 15-day walkout by 7,000 municipal workers. Chief steward Vernon Williams of Teamsters Local 214, which represents the city’s 600 trashmen, said union members decided to end their strike because some members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees’ Council 25 have crossed picket lines. The strike involves 7,000 AFSCME members and another 5,000 workers, including bus drivers and trash haulers, who were honoring the picket lines.
