Fear of fallout from the April 26 Chernobyl nuclear disaster in the Soviet Union has slashed Western tourism to Black Sea holiday resorts, Romanian and Bulgarian officials complained. Ioan Goga of the Bucharest Tourism Ministry said about 40,000 Western tourists have canceled holidays in Romania this summer because of what he called “Chernobyl psychosis.” Many of the tourists switched to vacations in Greece and Spain, he said. In Bulgaria, a state tourism official said Western tourism has fallen 20% from last year’s level.
