$1.4-Million Reward Offered for Killers of Scientist in Munich
A record reward of $1.4 million has been posted for information leading to the arrest of Red Army Faction terrorists who killed a Munich scientist and executive July 9, West German government sources said Wednesday.
They said it is the highest reward ever offered in West Germany and included significant private contributions.
Security sources said they hoped it would tempt informants to turn in the suspected killers.
The executive, nuclear physicist Karl Heinz Beckurts, was blown up by a bomb as he was being driven to work at the giant Siemens electrical company in Munich. His chauffeur was also killed.
The Red Army Faction, an ultraleftist guerrilla group, claimed responsibility for the attack. Police have since narrowed their search for the killers to fugitives Horst and Barbara Meyer.
The husband and wife guerrillas, both 30, are already wanted for the February, 1985, killing of Munich arms executive Ernst Zimmermann at his home not far from where Beckurts lived.
Zimmermann was tied to a chair and shot through the head.
