Santa Ana : SAMSON Claims Its Initiative Qualifies

A group that came up 15 signatures short in a petition drive to put a proposition on the November ballot claims to have discovered enough names that should have been accepted to warrant going to court today to contest the official result.

The proposition, which would impose district elections for the City Council and provide for a directly elected mayor, was supported by a coalition of citizens groups calling themselves the Santa Ana Merged Society of Neighbors (SAMSON). Spokesman Jim Lowman said Thursday that the group had discovered more than 15 signatures that should have been accepted as valid.

The results released by the city July 25 indicated that 6,273 valid signatures had been gathered. A minimum of 6,288 are required to qualify the initiative for the ballot.
