Champion Gary Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov played to a draw Friday in the third game of their match for the world chess title, as they had in the first two. The challenger offered the draw after his 35th move.

Karpov, 35, had the advantage of moving first with the white pieces, but was unable to make headway against the 23-year-old champion’s solid defense.

Experts said the game was a success for Kasparov, who gained his second draw with the handicap of playing black. He narrowly missed winning the second game with the white pieces.

Another full house was on hand at the Park Lane Hotel’s Art Deco ballroom Friday to watch the two Soviets.

Some experts were surprised that Kasparov, the youngest champion in the history of the game, did not call for a rest Friday after the disaster of Wednesday and Thursday when he turned a winning position into a draw with a wretched knight maneuver on the 39th move.

Each of the Soviet rivals now has 1 1/2 points in the match, which has a 24-game limit. The title goes to the one who achieves six victories or 12 1/2 points, but Kasparov retains it in a tie.

Wins are worth one point and draws are a half-point for each contestant.

The first 12 games are to be played in London and the next 12 in Leningrad. The next game will be played on Monday.
