Soviet Republic a Haven for Gamblers

MOSCOW — Gamblers from many parts of the Soviet Union are flocking to the central Asian republic of Uzbekistan to try their luck in a haven with no laws against playing for money, Tass news agency complained Friday.
It said professional gamblers from as far away as Moscow, Armenia and the Far East are living in the best hotels in the Uzbek capital, Tashkent, making their money by attracting simple people to play a game of chance in railroad stations, marketplaces and on the street.
