Five of football’s brightest stars--Paul Hornung, Ken Houston, Willie Lanier, Fran Tarkenton and Doak Walker--gathered Friday on the eve of their induction today into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The five players attended the traditional Mayor’s Breakfast to open the weekend that will culminate with the Hall of Fame induction ceremonies and the annual Hall of Fame exhibition game between the New England Patriots and the St. Louis Cardinals (Channels 7 and 10, 11:30 a.m. PDT).

“This is great,” said Hornung, who starred as a running back for the Green Bay Packers in the 1960s. “I’m not usually one to stand on ceremony, but I’ll gladly make an exception here. It’s not trite to say I’ve had a thrill a minute.”

Former Packer teammate Max McGee will introduce Hornung; one-time Houston Oilers Coach Wally Lemm will introduce Houston; Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt will introduce Lanier; Minnesota Vikings President Max Winter will introduce Tarkenton, and former Detroit Lions teammate Bobby Layne will introduce Walker.

The new inductees will bring the membership in the Hall to 133. Also invited to attend are the three surviving members of the 1966 group--Bill Dudley, George McAfee and Bulldog Turner--and the two survivors from 1977--Ray Flaherty and Jim Taylor.
