TRASHING THE MOVIES

Share

It was with great interest that I perused the various articles by Calendar’s “Gang of Five” (Sheila Benson, Kevin Thomas, Michael Wilmington, Patrick Goldstein and Charles Solomon) as they rated, rerated and neglected to rate some of the best movies of the ‘80s (“ ‘80s Movies--Trash and Treasures,” July 27).

Where was my kindred spirit Charles Champlin? He certainly would have saved from their undeserved ignominy the following films (unlisted, unmentioned and possibly unseen by the Gang of Five):

American Films: “Terms of Endearment”; “Victor, Victoria”; “An American Werewolf in London”; “Midnight Express”; “Ghostbusters”; “The Neverending Story.”

Foreign Films: “Das Boot” (West German); “Gandhi” (British); “Chariots of Fire” (British); “Breaker Morant” (Australian); “The Return of Martin Guerre” (French); “The Man From Snowy River” (Australian).

These movies can stand with any made in their own category and deserve to be seen and reseen!
