Gorman, Lytle Tied for Lead

Brian Gorman of Chula Vista birdied the final four holes Saturday to move into a first-place tie with Bill Lytle after the first round of the San Diego Open golf championships at the Cottonwood Country Club.

Gorman’s four birdies gave him a six-under-par 67 at the Ivanhoe Golf Course.

Lytle, of Hemet, had six birdies and no bogeys to tie Gorman at 67.

Three golfers, including defending champion Ted Lehman of Thousand Oaks, finished at 68.

Jack Forsyth of Oxnard and Hank Baran of Brawley also shot rounds of 68.

Saturday, 64 of the 210 golfers broke par on Ivanhoe. The tournament continues today on the Monte Vista course at Cottonwood.

Fred Couples shot a one-over-par 73 for a 211 total that left him in a tie for the lead going into today’s final round of the Western Open golf tournament at Oak Park, Ill.

Couples shared the top spot, five under par after 54 holes, with South African David Frost, who shot a 71.

Debbie Massey shot a two-under-par 70 for a 211 total and a one-stroke lead after three rounds of the $300,000 LPGA National Pro-Am at Denver.

Second-round leader Chris Johnson shot a 72 and was at 212, while Amy Alcott and Pat Bradley were at 213.

Defending champion Lee Elder shot a six-under-par 64 to take a four-stroke advantage with a 131 total after two rounds of the $250,000 Merrill Lynch-Golf Digest Commemorative senior tournament at Scarborough, N.Y.

In second place was first-round leader Chi Chi Rodriquez, who shot a 71.

Craig Stadler shot his third straight 66 and moved out to a two-stroke lead with a 198 total after 54 holes of the Scandinavian Enterprise Open at Stockholm.
