Nine more Navy ships may be allowed to berth in San Francisco alongside the refurbished battleship Missouri and its companion cruiser, which are scheduled to arrive in 1988. If reassignment of the nine ships is approved, it would bring to 39 the number of ships permanently berthed in the bay, spokesman Cmdr. Fredrick Gorell. It also would bring 3,000 more sailors to an area of scarce and expensive housing, he said, and “we’re already 3,000 housing units short right now.” Other ports being considered include Long Beach, Seattle and Honolulu.
