Kasparov Scores 1st Win in Chess Match

Titleholder Gary Kasparov today won the fourth game of the world chess championship, the first victory in the match, when challenger Anatoly Karpov resigned before the adjourned game was to resume.

The score in the 24-game match now stands at 2 1/2-1 1/2 in Kasparov’s favor. The winner will be the first player to score six victories or 12 1/2 points. In the event of a 12-12 tie, Kasparov will retain his title.
