Six football players and one basketball recruit have been prohibited from attending the University of Georgia this fall because of academic problems.

Terry Swinson of Homerville is the only basketball recruit affected. He failed to meet college entrance exam requirements. Five football signees also fell short of the minimum, while a junior college football transfer did not qualify because of poor grades.

Of the 24 players signed by football Coach Vince Dooley, 18 are eligible this season. NCAA probation limited Georgia to 23 signees, but one was added when others did not qualify.

Under NCAA bylaws, high school seniors who do not reach specific college-entrance test (Scholastic Aptitude Test) and grade-point levels are ineligible for their freshman season. Georgia also added its own rule and decided to prohibit non-qualifiers from enrolling.

Also ineligible are football players Randy Fisher, a wide receiver from Brunswick, Ga., defensive back Ben Smith and running back Alfred Rawls of Wilcox (Ga.) County; tight end Reggie Barlow of Albany, Ga., and wide receiver France Green of Tallahassee, Fla.

Defensive back Harold Hicks, a junior college transfer from California, was ruled ineligible because of insufficient grades.
