Test-Tube Baby Boy Believed to Be First Whose Sex Was Pre-Selected
Justin Spencer, 6 months old and introduced publicly for the first time Tuesday, is just what his parents and the doctor ordered.
The blond, blue-eyed boy apparently is the nation’s first test-tube baby whose sex was pre-selected and engineered.
“To the best of our knowledge, Justin is the first in-vitro sex-selected baby born in the country,” said Dr. Steve Taylor of the Fertility Institute, one of a few clinics in the nation that offer sex selection in the in-vitro process.
After months of maintaining their privacy, Tony and Phyllis Spencer agreed to introduce their son at a news conference.
“We were more worried about the baby being healthy than what sex it would be,” the father said. “But, when I found it was a boy, well, it was a real joy.”
