The Justice Department has dropped efforts to subpoena at least eight Israelis to testify before federal grand juries as part of an investigation of Israel’s alleged attempt to illegally acquire U.S. technology to build cluster bombs. Assistant Atty. Gen. Stephen Trott said the subpoenas for the Israelis, who work in the United States, were withdrawn “in return for pledges of cooperation by the government of Israel and agreement on providing information relevant to the inquiry.” The United States in 1982 banned export of any technology or equipment to Israel that could be employed in the manufacture of cluster bombs after they were used in the Israeli invasion of Lebanon. Israel has denied any wrongdoing.
